Acoustic ceilings in the home and which rooms benefit the most?

Poor acoustics in the home are rarely felt as one distinct problem. It is more of a diffuse unrest. Conversations require a little more energy, background noise from the kitchen fills the entire living room, and you become tired more quickly from being in the room. Most homes have at least one room where an acoustic ceiling would make a noticeable difference, but not all rooms benefit equally from it.

Some rooms have a combination of hard surfaces, ceiling height and usage patterns that make them obvious candidates. Others work fine as they are. Here, we focus on which rooms you should prioritise and what improvement you can expect.

Kitchen-dining area

The kitchen-dining area is the room in most Danish homes where an acoustic ceiling makes the biggest and most noticeable difference. It is typically the largest room in the home, it has the most hard surfaces, and it is the room where the most people and sound sources are gathered at the same time.

Kitchen worktops, tiles, steel, glass and smooth walls reflect sound instead of absorbing it. When cooking, conversation, play and TV are happening at the same time, reverberation quickly builds up, and it becomes difficult to hold a normal conversation without raising your voice. In open-plan layouts, where the kitchen and living room flow together, sound has no natural boundaries to stop at, and the problem spreads to the rest of the home.

Many newer standard houses further amplify the effect because the kitchen-dining area often has a vaulted ceiling or extra ceiling height. The larger volume of air gives sound more space to move in, and the sloping surfaces send reflections in unpredictable directions. In a newly built standard house in Silkeborg, the family experienced precisely this combination of hard plasterboard ceilings, an open layout and a vaulted ceiling in the kitchen-dining area, which created significant reverberation that made everyday life unsettled. The solution was acoustic panels installed directly onto the existing ceiling.

In kitchen-dining areas, you should typically cover 40 to 50 percent of the ceiling surface to achieve a noticeable effect. Prioritise the area above the dining table and sofa area, as this is where people spend the most time and conversations take place. Large panels measuring 1200 x 600 mm are typically well suited to kitchen-dining areas because they cover efficiently and create a calm, cohesive look. If the room has a vaulted ceiling or sloping ceilings, it typically requires slightly more coverage.

Living room and lounge area

In living rooms with an open connection to other rooms or with extra ceiling height, poor acoustics are one of the most common complaints among homeowners. The living room is where people most often notice the problem because it is where they sit quietly and listen to conversations, music, films or simply the quietness of the room.

Hard wood or tile floors, large window sections and high ceilings are typical features of the modern living room, and they are also the recipe for long reverberation time. An open layout towards the kitchen or hallway means that sound from the rest of the home flows freely into the living room, and the room never feels completely calm.

In a separate living room, 30 to 40 percent coverage is typically sufficient. Living rooms that flow together with the kitchen may require more. The panels are placed above the main living areas, such as the sofa group, armchair or the place where you sit and talk or watch television.

An important consideration is that the living room is often where people notice the problem, but the kitchen-dining area is typically where the problem is greatest. If the budget only stretches to one room, the kitchen-dining area provides the greatest improvement. If you already have an existing ceiling, the panels can in most cases be installed directly on top without renovation.

Home office

An acoustic ceiling in the home office improves speech clarity during video meetings and reduces the background noise that affects concentration over time. It is a room where most people do not think about acoustics, but where the difference is clearly felt in everyday life.

The home office is often a smaller room of 10 to 15 m², but it typically has the same hard surfaces as the rest of the home, from a smooth ceiling and hard floor to a large screen and desk, all of which reflect sound. During video meetings, reverberation amplifies your own voice and makes it harder for the other party to hear you clearly. Over a full working day, the constant sound exposure can cause fatigue that cannot immediately be explained by anything other than the room's acoustics.

The good news is that the home office is the room where the smallest effort makes the most noticeable difference. The room is small, and the sound source is close by. 30 percent coverage is often enough, and a home office of 10 m² typically requires 3 m² of panels above the desk area.

Bedroom

In bedrooms, acoustics are less about reverberation and more about creating calm. The bedroom rarely has the same problem with reverberation as the kitchen-dining area because the room is typically smaller, has soft surfaces such as a bed and curtains, and does not have the same sound sources. However, in homes with open layouts or thin walls, sound from the kitchen, living room or children's room enters the bedroom, affecting both relaxation and sleep.

An acoustic ceiling in the bedroom dampens the sounds already present in the room and reduces the reverberation that can make even faint sounds clearer than they need to be. 20 to 30 percent coverage above the bed area is typically sufficient.

However, it is important to understand that acoustic panels absorb sound inside the room but do not block sound coming through walls, floors or doors. If the problem is primarily noise from the floor above, from a neighbour or from the street, it is an insulation issue, and a different type of solution is required. The bedroom is the room where this distinction is most important to understand before investing.

Office and meeting room

In offices and meeting rooms, an acoustic ceiling reduces background noise and improves speech intelligibility, which directly affects productivity and meeting efficiency. This is where acoustics go from being a matter of comfort to a matter of functionality.

Open-plan offices with many people, hard floors and glass walls are the classic challenge. Sound from keyboards, phone calls and conversations mixes together and creates a constant noise level that makes it difficult to concentrate. Meeting rooms with glass walls and hard ceilings amplify voices inside the room, making conversations tiring over time. Cafés, restaurants and reception areas face the same challenges, amplified by many people and hard surfaces.

Coverage in commercial spaces is typically higher than in private homes. Meeting rooms and conference rooms should aim for 50 to 70 percent, open office environments 40 to 50 percent, and cafés and restaurants typically 50 to 60 percent.

In commercial settings, fire classification is often a requirement. ARKUs panels are classified B-s1,d0 according to EN 13501-1, which meets the requirements for public buildings and commercial premises.

Where should you start?

Not all rooms require an acoustic ceiling, and few people need to cover the entire home at once. The priority depends on where the problem is felt most and where you spend the most time.

If the budget stretches to one room, it should be the kitchen-dining area. It is the room with the most hard surfaces, the most sound sources and the longest time spent in it. It is also where the improvement is felt most by the whole household, as it is typically the gathering place of the home.

If you want to cover two rooms, the combination of a kitchen-dining area and home office is the most effective. It provides improved acoustics in both the shared space of everyday life and the room where you need concentration.

If the entire home is to be covered over time, the order is typically: kitchen-dining area first, then living room and home office, and bedroom last, because it is the room that typically has the least need.
